AI startups are shifting from seats to outcomes
Per-seat pricing was built around human users, but AI agents don’t sit in seats.
On June 1, GitHub shifted Copilot from seat-based to token-based pricing. Power users woke up to bills 10x–50x higher, triggering a backlash thread with 500+ comments and 900+ downvotes in 48 hours.
This is one of the many examples of how AI pricing is becoming outcome-based: Sierra bills per resolved ticket, EvenUp per claim, Dex per first-year salary, and Juno per return filed.
